P01 vs P59 LS ECU Guide
The P01 and P59 PCMs are the most common engine computers used for Gen III LS swaps. Both are capable, but there are key differences worth understanding before you source an ECU for your build.
Supported LS Engines
Both the P01 and P59 can run most Gen III LS engines. The swap builder's choice of PCM is usually driven by availability, connector style, and tuning preference rather than engine compatibility.
P01 vs P59 — Head to Head
Both PCMs are solid choices for LS swap builds. Here is how they compare side by side.
P01 PCM
- 1999–2002 GM trucks and SUVs
- Early Gen III LS swap builds
- Budget and baseline swap projects
- Proven and reliable in swap applications
- Widely supported by HP Tuners and TunerPro
- Supports speed density tuning
- Drive-by-cable throttle body
- Inexpensive and easy to source
P59 PCM
- 2003–2007 GM trucks and SUVs
- Mid-to-late Gen III LS swap builds
- Performance and higher-spec swap projects
- More memory — supports larger tune files
- Faster processor for better real-time control
- Better tuning resolution across all tables
- More operating systems available
- Drive-by-cable and drive-by-wire supported
Which ECU is Better for an LS Swap?
Both PCMs work well in swap applications. The right choice depends on your build goals, budget, and harness situation.
P01 Makes Sense When
- You already have a P01 harness and ECU from your donor vehicle
- Budget is tight and a P01 is available cheap
- You are building a basic startup tune and don't need advanced calibration features
- Your build uses a drive-by-cable throttle body
P59 is the Better Pick When
- You want more tuning headroom and resolution for a performance build
- You are running a drive-by-wire throttle body
- You plan to do a full calibration beyond a basic startup tune
- You want more operating system options from the tuning community
The Short Answer
Most builders who have a choice prefer the P59 because of its expanded memory, faster processor, and better tuning resolution. If you are starting from scratch and sourcing an ECU for a new swap build, the P59 is generally the better starting point.
Either way, both PCMs require the same essential calibration changes — VATS removal, injector setup, MAP sensor config, and fan control — before the engine will run correctly in a swap chassis.
