Why a Cammed LS Needs More Than a VATS Delete
A VATS delete only removes the factory security system so the engine is allowed to run. It does not correct the calibration for a larger camshaft.
A cammed LS changes how much air the engine moves, especially during startup, idle, low-speed driving, and deceleration. That is why a swapped engine may start but still have problems such as:
- Needing throttle to start
- Stalling when placed in gear
- Hunting or surging at idle
- Hanging RPM between shifts
- Poor throttle response
- Running too rich or too lean
- Hard hot or cold starts
- Weak drivability at low speed
A proper cammed-engine startup tune may require adjustments to:
- Startup and cranking airflow
- Base running airflow
- Idle speed and idle spark
- VE and MAF calibration
- Injector data
- Power enrichment
- Throttle follower and cracker settings
- Transmission and torque-management settings
- Fan controls and swap-related diagnostics
Every combination is different. Engine size, cam specs, injectors, transmission, converter, intake, MAF, MAP sensor, gearing, and fuel type all affect what the tune needs.
A VATS delete may let the engine run, but a calibration built around the actual combination is what helps it start clean, idle smoothly, drive predictably, and make reliable power.
