LS Swapping a Square Body C10: What Your Base Tune Needs to Know
The square body Chevy and GMC trucks from 1973 to 1987 are one of the most popular LS swap platforms around. There’s room in the engine bay, parts are easy to find, and a junkyard 5.3 or 6.0 makes these trucks feel brand new.
But a square body was built for a carbureted small block, not a computer-controlled LS. Here’s what the tune needs to know to make your swap drive right.
The Most Common Square Body LS Combos
Most square body swaps use one of these setups:
- A 5.3 or 6.0 from a GM truck, usually stock or with a mild cam
- A 4L60E or 4L80E automatic, or a manual like an NV4500 or T56
- A P01 or P59 PCM for Gen 3 engines, or an E38 for Gen 4
Whatever combination you choose, the tune has to match it. Not sure which engine to use? See 4.8 vs. 5.3 vs. 6.0.
The Speedometer Problem
This is the issue that catches more square body swappers than anything else. Square bodies came with a mechanical speedometer run by a cable from the transmission. The 4L60E and 4L80E use an electronic speed sensor and don’t have a place for a speedometer cable.
You have a few options:
- Switch to an electronic speedometer or gauge cluster that reads an electronic speed signal
- Use a converter that turns an electronic speed signal into a mechanical cable drive, so you can keep your factory speedometer
- Use a GPS speed sensor if your speed signal setup is complicated
Whichever you choose, the tune needs your rear gear ratio and tire size so the PCM calculates vehicle speed correctly. That’s what your shift points, torque converter lockup, and speedometer all depend on.
Throttle: Cable or Drive-by-Wire
Square bodies have a cable-operated gas pedal.
- A P01 with a cable throttle body keeps things simple and works with a cable pedal setup.
- A P59 or E38 with drive-by-wire needs an electronic gas pedal mounted in the cab and the matching throttle body.
Both work well. Just make sure your PCM, throttle body, and pedal all match. (See our P01 vs. P59 guide.)
Transmission Setup
If you’re running a 4L60E or 4L80E, the PCM controls shifting, line pressure, and torque converter lockup. The tune needs the right transmission, gear ratio, and tire size, or you’ll get late, early, or harsh shifts.
Running a Gen 4 engine with an E38? A 4L60E or 4L80E needs a separate transmission controller (TCM), and our E38 base tunes include TCM programming for both.

Cooling: Electric Fans
Many square body swaps switch to electric fans to make room and clean up the front of the engine. If the PCM controls your fans, the tune has to have fan control turned on, with on and off temperatures set. (See LS Swap Electric Fans.)
A/C
Plenty of square bodies still have factory A/C or get an aftermarket system. If you’re running A/C through the PCM, the tune needs the A/C setup turned on so the engine bumps idle when the compressor kicks on, and so the fans come on with the A/C. Let us know when you order.
Fuel System
Your square body’s original fuel system was built for a carburetor running a few psi. An LS needs about 58 psi from an EFI pump. Most swaps use an in-tank EFI pump or a pump module made for these trucks, plus a 58 psi regulator. (See LS Swap Fuel Pressure.)
Tachometer and Gauges
If your square body has a factory tach or you’re adding an aftermarket one, many need to be set to 4-cylinder mode to read right with an LS signal. Aftermarket digital dashes usually have a setting for it.
